“Dimitrie Cantemir” Christian University has awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Ms. Martha C. Nussbaum, Dr. University Professor at the University of Chicago

The Senate of the University, meeting in an extraordinary session, decided, on the proposal of Prof. Corina Adriana Dumitrescu, President of the Senate, to award the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Prof. MARTHA C. NUSSBAUM, philosopher and Ernst Freund Distinguished Professor of Law and Ethics in the Department of Philosophy and School of Law at the University of Chicago.
The award ceremony took place during the International Conference “The Rule of Law, from its Origins to the Present”. Prof. Dr. Corina Adriana Dumitrescu, President of the Senate, opened the ceremony.
Due to the Covid pandemic, the event was skype streamed from the University of Chicago. Prof. Dr. Marinella Turdean, Vice Rector of the University, delivered the Laudatio in which she presented the outstanding personality of the University Professor Dr. MARTHA C. NUSSBAUM.
She studied at New York University, then went on to Harvard for her master’s degree, where she also completed her doctorate in philosophy, becoming the first woman to receive the Harvard Junior Fellowship. He went on to teach philosophy and the study of the languages, literature and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. In 1994, he joined the University of Chicago Law School, becoming the Ernst Freund Distinguished Professor of Ethics and Law. He is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics, the Divinity School and the Department of Political Science and a member of the South Asian Studies Committee.
Professor Dr. MARTHA C. NUSSBAUM is highly regarded internationally for her work in the fields of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, feminist philosophy, political philosophy, philosophy of art and is energetically involved in tutoring and mentoring students in these disciplines. She is the recipient of numerous awards and over 60 honorary degrees, thanks to her prodigious activity as a teacher and author of over 450 articles and 21 books. MARTHA C. NUSSBAUM is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, an Acdemician of the Finnish Academy and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy.
As a sign of high esteem for her exceptional scientific and didactic achievements, the University’s management and the entire academic community are particularly honored to confer the high title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Professor MARTHA C. NUSSBAUM, a great personality and model of academic conduct and scientific professionalism.
