“Dimitrie Cantemir” Christian University conferred the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Professor Dr. Mortimer Newlin Stead SELLERS, Regents of the University System of Maryland, Director of the Center for International and Comparative Law and President of the International Association for the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy.

The Senate of the University, meeting in extraordinary session, decided to confer the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Professor Dr. Mortimer Newlin Stead SELLERS, a prestigious personality, outstanding academic and renowned researcher by the multidisciplinary and complex nature of his scientific work that has ranged from the history of law to the philosophy of law, with emphasis on international law, constitutional law, comparative law.
As a result, on May 18, 2018, the “Dimitrie Cantemir” Christian University, in the solemn session held within the International Conference “Philosophy of Law from Enlightenment to Contemporaneity”, conferred the high title to Professor Dr. Mortimer Newlin Stead SELLERS, Regents of the University System of Maryland, Director of the Center for International and Comparative Law and President of the International Association for the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy.
Prof. Prof. Dr. Cristiana Cristureanu, Rector of the University, read the academic document Laudatio which highlighted the exceptional contribution of Prof. Dr. Mortimer Newlin Stead SELLERS, a prominent personality in the field of international and comparative law, Summa cum Laude graduate of Harvard College, Harvard Law School, University College of Oxford, Rhodes and Frank Knox Scholar, holder of the title of Doctor in Literae Humaniores. After completing his undergraduate studies in 1989, he began his teaching career at the University of Baltimore School of Law, then as a visiting professor at prestigious universities in the USA and Europe, as well as at the Academy of International Law in The Hague. Since 2003, Mr. Sellers has held the title of Regents Professor, the highest academic rank in the University System of Maryland. He is recognized as a leading scholar among jurists in the sphere of international politics, promoting the reinvigoration of conceptions of republicanism, studying and writing about the historical antecedents and ideological link between the French Revolution and the American Revolution. He contributed to the growing role of philosophy and legal education in political and social change worldwide. He actively participated in the development of post-communist and post-authoritarian legal institutions in Europe, Asia and South America. Professor SELLERS is the author of an impressive number of scholarly works, with a clear impact on international and comparative law theory. Among other initiatives, he has emphasized the importance of promoting international cooperation for global justice through the European-American Consortium for Legal Education (EACLE), working in the Brazil-US Administration of Justice Project and the International Comparative Law Association. He is President of the International Association for the Philosophy of Law and Social Philosophy (IVR).
The Doctor Doctor Honoris Causa diploma was read in Latin by the President of the University Senate, Prof. Corina-Adriana Dumitrescu.
